2004 Chevrolet Impala SS review front exterior
Continued from Page 1

To handle the extra energy, the Impala SS gets a beefier four-wheel independent suspension, with larger-diameter stabilizer bars at both front and rear. Spring rates are stiffer, to help reduce body roll while cornering. Shock absorbers are borrowed from Chevrolet's police cars, and the rear end has been lowered by 30 millimeters. Diamond-cut cast aluminum 17-inch wheels hold Goodyear P235/55R17 W-rated tires. Antilocking all-disc brakes work with race-inspired cooling ducts.

Painted in monochromatic black, much like the Impala SS of 1994-96, the new sedan boasts bright stainless steel dual exhaust tips and special "SS" badging. Color-keyed moldings decorate the bodysides, and a special decklid spoiler is installed at the rear. Fog lamps are integrated into the lowered front fascias. Body-colored taillamp appliques are said to be Corvette-inspired. Chevrolet promises a blend of "exhilarating acceleration, enhanced handling and superior driveability" for the Impala SS, which was developed with the assistance of GM's Performance Division.

2004 Chevrolet Impala SS engine
Cranking out 240 horsepower and a burly 280 pound-feet of torque, performance is the foremost differentiator between the Impala SS and a regular Impala sedan.

Inside, the Impala SS driver faces a racing-inspired six-gauge instrument cluster that includes a supercharger boost gauge. Floor mats and door trim display "SS" logos. Space is provided for five passengers.

As expected, performance is the foremost differentiator between the Impala SS and a regular Impala sedan. However, as in other supercharged models from General Motors divisions, it's a subtle breed of performance. Tromp the accelerator pedal and the Impala SS takes off in a hurry, to be sure. But it's not the sort of neck-snapping pickup that harks back to the old musclecar era of the late 1960s and early 1970s, when rear-wheel-drive cars took their punishment from mighty V-8 engines. Actually, it's closer to the sensations delivered by the 1994-96 model.

In the handling department, the SS ranks a clear cut above its more subdued mates. Despite its toughened suspension, the Impala SS also delivers a pleasant ride--about as easy as any full-size sedan. Like all Impalas, the SS boasts plenty of interior space. Invitingly cushioned seats are upholstered in leather.
