2004 Chevrolet Colorado front exterior review
Continued from Page 2

Brakes are disc front, drum rear with standard 4-wheel ABS. An automatic locking rear differential is standard with the Z71 suspension and optional on other models, while traction control is available with 2wd models.

2004 Chevrolet Colorado engine
The new standard Vortec 2800 four generates a respectable 175 hp, while the new optional Vortec 3500 5-cylinder makes 220 hp.

The bed on Regular and Extended Cab models measures 6 ft., 1 in. long, with tall sides to optimize box volume, while the Crew Cab's is a foot shorter. Both offer two-tier cargo loading and a unique 55-degree tailgate position that allows long items, such as the obligatory 4-by-8-ft plywood sheets, to be transported flat. The tailgate otherwise opens to a full 89 degrees and can be key-locked in place to prevent theft.

To maximize Colorado's environmental friendliness, its fuel tank and windshield glass are lead-free, its lighting systems are free of mercury and cadmium, and its plastic and magnesium parts are recyclable. Maximum payload capacities vary from 990 lbs. for the 2WD Sport Crew Cab to 1843 lbs. for the 2WD Z71 Regular Cab. Maximum towing capacity with the 5-cylinder engine and automatic transmission is 4,000 lbs.

Base stickers range from $16,200 for the Regular Cab to $26,995 for the Z71 4WD Crew Cab. Standard equipment on all includes air conditioning, ABS brakes, power rack-and-pinion steering, power locks, driver information center, PASSlock theft-deterrent system, a 19.6-gallon fuel tank, heavy duty 690-amp battery and 100-amp alternator, cargo tie-downs and an auxiliary power outlet.

Our LS Crew Cab Sport test truck started at $24,090 and topped out at $29,730 with a heavy $5005 option load that included the I-5 engine ($1,000) and 4-speed automatic transmission ($1,095), heated leather-faced power seats ($1,495), OnStar convenience and security system ($695), AM/FM/6-disc CD changer ($395) and XM satellite radio ($325), plus a $635 destination charge. Its EPA economy was 17 mpg City, 22 highway. Turn loose the cat but lose the sing-along guy and you'll be ready to roll. (www.chevrolet.com)
