2004 Cadillac XLR front driving review
Continued from Page 1

Thanks to its low center of gravity, near 50/50 weight distribution and the same set of advanced chassis systems standard on the $76,000 XLR sports car—4-channel StabiliTrak, speed-sensitive variable-effort steering, 4-channel ABS with Panic Brake Assist and traction control and available Magnetic Ride Control (MRC)—SRX is astoundingly capable both on-road and off and in any weather. MRC, the world's fastest-reacting suspension-control system, and a segment first, is electronically controlled, magnetic-fluid based real-time damping.

2004 Cadillac XLR engine
SRX offers a choice of a 320-hp 4.6-liter V-8 or a 3.6-liter V-6, each mated to its own 5-speed automatic.

The interior offers a plush and pleasing blend of wood and leather, multiple storage compartments, the segment's largest optional sunroof and a rear cargo management system available as an alternative to the third-row seat. The second-row seat boasts class-leading legroom and folds virtually flat, while the third-row bench power-folds into the floor.

In design and development of the SRX, Cadillac says it put heavy emphasis on convenient, usable passenger and storage space. With the optional third-row seat, it accommodates seven passengers, each with at least one convenient cupholder. Additional storage is available in covered front door compartments, front door map pockets, front seatback pockets and a front center console with two compartments and a bin behind it.

The optional rear cargo management system, with three cargo compartments and a removable storage bin, will stow anything from a car care or emergency kit to sports equipment to DVDs or CDs. Roof rails and large side storage bins along the rear cargo area are standard, and the rear coat hooks are accessible from either the rear doors or the liftgate. For wind and sun worshipers, nearly the entire SRX interior can be opened to the elements with the optional "UltraView" sunroof system, the largest available in the segment. It extends to provide up to 5.6 feet of open air over the first and second rows, has a vented glass roof over the third row seat and includes a retractable power sunshade.

SRX will be built alongside CTS at GM's new the state-of-the-art Lansing, MI, Grand River Assembly facility. Pricing begins at $37,995 with the V-6, $46,300 with the V-8. EPA economy (preliminary) is 18 City, 23 Highway for the RWD V-6, 16/18 for the AWD V-8. (www.cadillac.com)
