2003 Toyota Camry SE front driving

2003 Toyota Camry engine
This all-aluminum motivator uses twin balance shafts for added smoothness and variable timing on the intake valves for a broader torque band.

Base engine is a 2.4-liter DOHC inline four that makes 157 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 162 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 revs. Related by design to the standard engine in the Highlander SUV, this all-aluminum, near maintenance-free motivator uses twin balance shafts for added smoothness, variable timing on the intake valves for a broader torque band and a new quick-light catalyst to help it meet ULEV smog specs. The 3.0-liter V-6 remains an option. It now makes 192 horses at 5,200 rpm but holds firm at 209 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 revs.

Transmission choices for the base engine include either a 5-speed manual or a lower-friction/faster-shifting "Super" version of Toyota's electronically controlled 4-speed automatic. However, the V-6 only comes with the latter transmission. Not quite as quick and admittedly less convenient in stop-and-go traffic compared to an SE with the optional powertrain, the 4-cylinder/5-speed combo in our tester still made an impressive case for itself in daily driving. Weighing 207 pounds less and costing $830 fewer dollars, it matches sprightly acceleration with noticeably better balance—not only in overall dynamics, but on the budget side of the equation as well.

Speaking of price, stickers on the new Camry start at $18,970 for an LE, $20,310 for a SE and $22,295 for an XLE. While all three Camry variants easily exceed what's already a bona fide automotive benchmark, we think the SE comes across as the best of this new breed. If you're looking for an impeccably built midsize sedan with a bit more spice in its basic recipe, this is an excellent place to start the search. (www.toyota.com)
