2003 Ford Windstar
Practical, comfortable & safer than ever

All Windstars share the same 3.8-liter V-6 engine that generates 200 horsepower and 240 lb.-ft. of torque.
These days, vehicle safety is a core concern with family oriented car shoppers, and the Windstar measures up well in this important respect. To help keep you out of trouble, antilock braking is standard. Side-impact airbags are standard in the Windstar Limited and available for other versions. With side airbags installed, the Windstar scores a five-star rating all around in the crash-test program operated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Ford's front passenger seat has a weight sensor that can automatically shut off the passenger-side airbag if it's not needed. Ford also offers a Reverse Sensing System that warns of obstacles at the rear when the vehicle is backing up. A newly available AdvanceTrac traction-control system can apply individual brakes and reduce engine power as needed, to manage wheelspin in slippery conditions.
All Windstars carry seven occupants, except for the cargo edition, which has seats for only the driver and front passenger. Bench seats are installed in the second and third rows of the Windstar LX, but bucket-style seats go into the top-line models. SEL and Limited editions feature leather upholstery. With rear seats folded down, the Windstar boasts a cargo capacity of up to 136.5 cubic feet.

With so many versions offered, Windstar buyers can equip their vehicle to suit their unique needs. Need room for family camping gear? A roof rack is standard on all passenger models. So is an overhead console, which incorporates a "conversation mirror" that lets you easily see what mischief your kids are up to. Adjustable brake/gas pedals are an especially appealing option for drivers of shorter stature rightly concerned about maintaining a seating position that's a safe distance from the airbag mounted in the steering wheel. A memory package will adjust the pedals, driver's seat and outside mirrors to your preset positions—a neat feature when two drivers regularly share driving duties. To keep the youngsters occupied during long trips, Ford offers an Autovision rear-seat video entertainment system with a pull-down 6.4-inch screen a removable video cassette player and a remote control.
With rear seats folded down, the Windstar delivers a cargo capacity of up to 136.5 cubic feet. A 3-door, 2-seat cargo version is also available.
While some SUVs still have a hard time delivering a truly "car-like" driving feel, the Windstar, like the other most popular minivans, feels manageable and natural from the moment you get in it. Good engine response coupled with quiet smoothness lends the powertrain a quality feel. The transmission performs well overall, though the downshifts are occasionally on the leisurely side when pulling out to pass. Ride quality is compliant and comfortable, with predictable steering response and comforting stability. The brakes have a solid, confident feel as well.
Seating comfort is good, particularly in the front buckets with their long, supportive bases. The layout of the interior is well reasoned and practical-just what you'd expect from a class of vehicle that is designed for real-world usefulness above all else.
