2003 Ford Focus Wagon
A family hauler with European flair

On the road, the front-wheel drive Focus has nimble handling and responsive steering thanks to its "Control Blade" multi-link independent rear suspension. The space-efficient design of this suspension has the side benefit of contributing to cabin room. This setup helps reduce rear-end lift under braking, while allowing enough compliance to absorb sharp-edged road irregularities. Up front, the zero-offset MacPherson strut suspension helps reduce body lean during cornering.
One of the more significant changes for 2003 is one that most customers will never see. Ford says it has taken steps to reduce road noise (a common Focus complaint of this journalist) by improving body sealing, while adding new underbody spray-on sound deadener and thicker carpet underlay. It did appear to help since the vehicle we drove seemed quieter than the last Focus Wagon we drove.
In the area of safety, Ford has done a good job of engineering what it calls its Personal Safety System into the Focus Wagon. This collection of features works together to help protect the driver and front passenger in the event of a collision. Components include an electronic crash severity sensor, dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags, optional front side air bags ($350), driver's seat position sensor, front seat belt retractors and pretensioners, and "Safety cell" body construction. In addition, Ford has made traction control available for 2003 as a stand-alone option ($115). This represents a significant savings over the cost of the AdvanceTrac stability control system; a $1,625 option that includes anti-lock brakes and traction control. While AdvanceTrac is a good system, it's just a bit pricey for those on a budget.
To demonstrate how confident it is regarding Focus reliability, Ford has introduced a new 5-year/100,000 mile powertrain coverage plan for all 2003 Focus models. The no-charge Powertrain Extended Service Plan will be transferable from one owner to the next, offering new Focus buyers both long-term peace of mind and improved resale values. The plan, which includes roadside assistance coverage, complements the 3-year/36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and five-year anti-corrosion warranty currently offered on the Focus.
"Focus is already the segment leader in terms of driving dynamics," said Steve Lyons, president of Ford Division. "This powertrain plan makes Focus even more competitive, and it clearly demonstrates our confidence in this great product."
