When we think of amply-sized sport coupes, European and Asian brands tend to come to mind. That's partly because North American automakers have largely abandoned that niche. Only Chrysler offers a comparable model—the Sebring coupe—to rival Chevrolet's long-lived Monte Carlo.
If you haven't driven a Monte lately, you might have a surprise in store. Chevrolet's stylish mid-sized front-drive two-door offers considerable road-going enjoyment for a more modest price than any import brand. No, you cannot expect European-style precision, but the Monte Carlo stands significantly above the usual domestic automobiles—not only in road feel but in solid construction. Rather than merely adequate, this coupe displays an appealing level of excellence.
Racing-inspired styling, evolved from Chevrolet's victories at NASCAR events, gives the Monte Carlo an assertive look all its own.
Racing-inspired styling, evolved from Chevrolet's victories at NASCAR events, gives the Monte Carlo an assertive look all its own. Redesigned for 2000 in a chunky but sleek profile, the Monte Carlo looks almost as if it's carved from a single block of steel—something many designers strive for, but not everyone achieves. A long sloping hood, short rear deck and thick C-pillars help create its athletic stance.
Changes are few for 2003, led by new five-spoke 16-inch aluminum wheels for both the base LS and the more powerful SS coupe. A Smoker's Package is now available, and remote keyless entry is newly standard in the LS coupe. XM Satellite radio is available for 2003, delivering more than a hundred digital channels of broadcasting.
A 180-horsepower, 3.4-liter V-6 goes into the LS coupe, driving a four-speed automatic transmission. The Monte Carlo SS gets a 3.8-liter V-6 that whips up 200 horsepower. That engine is optional for the LS. Both engines promise appealing gas mileage on regular fuel: at least 30 mpg on the highway, according to EPA estimates.
