The M5 cabin is set apart from its 5 Series stablemate with features that include BMW M instrumentation, sport steering wheel, and 16-way power/heated sport seats.

The M5's basic platform and suspension systems are based on the 540i 6-Speed model. This means a strong, rigid body structure and aluminum suspension components for reduced unsprung weight. Suspension upgrades over the 540 include slightly firmer springs, more aggressive shock absorbers and steel upper suspension arm bushings. The recirculating-ball steering system features a quicker steering ratio and power assist that varies according to vehicle speed (rather than engine speed like the 540i) for extra-firm road feel.

To help keep the M5 under control, 18x8 front and 18x9.5 rear BMW M Double Spoke wheels are wrapped with 245/40ZR18 front and 275/35ZR18 rear low-profile performance tires. To match the M5's strong engine performance, the four-wheel ventilated brake discs have been enlarged nearly an inch in the front and rear. Three electronic driver aids make up the Dynamic Stability Control system including traction control, antilock braking and a cornering stabilization setup—all aimed at optimizing handling and traction under all road conditions, wet or dry.

How does all this techno magic work? Quite well, we'd say. We spent time behind the wheel of a 2003 M5 on a variety of roads from long, open freeways to curve-filled mountain highways to traffic-clogged city streets. What we came to love the most about the M5 is its versatility. It can be driven comfortably at high rates of speed no matter the road surface. Its ride is firm, yet not jarring, while the handling balance and grip are nearly perfect. You can realistically drive it as an everyday vehicle and have the confidence that it has the ability to perform at the highest levels when the urge hits. Few performance cars today can stake this claim.

The M5 is powered by a 394 horsepower 4.9-liter V-8 that can accelerate it from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds while providing room for 5 adults and a reasonably large trunk.

For 2003, 6-speed sport package-equipped 540i sedans and M5s have essentially the same front spoiler and rear apron. Despite this, BMW M does a good job at setting its automobiles apart from their regular-production counterparts with tasteful aesthetic accents. The M5's exterior design distinctions include a large front air intake that's screened with diagonal mesh, M-style logos and side mirrors, rear decklid spoiler, and special M only colors Le Mans Blue, Carbon Black and Imola Red.

The M5 cabin is set apart from its 5 Series stablemate with features that include BMW M instrumentation, sport steering wheel, and 16-way power/heated sport seats that provide excellent comfort and support. Buyers have a choice between several interior trim materials including two different Nappa leathers, and titanium finished trim or Bruyere Club wood trim. Additional standard interior features include a premium audio system with 6-disc CD changer and BMW's Onboard Navigation System.
