Although its 4,352-pound curb weight and SUV-like center of gravity do make themselves known during at-the-limit transition moves, overall, the QX4 displays a good deal more agility than you might expect to find in a vehicle with that mass and 8.3 inches of ground clearance. About the only element that does seem a bit incongruous is the decision to go with a disc/drum brake package. While their stopping power seems entirely adequate, one would expect to find a disc at each wheel on a vehicle in this price range.
Amenities include leather seats, Bird's Eye maple trim, a 150-watt Bose sound system, electro-fluorescent gauges and an optional entertainment system with flip-down screen.
Although its slightly elevated step-up and relatively low roofline do require a bit of technique be exercised when entering the QX4, that extra effort definitely proves worthwhile. The inner sanctum is quiet, secure and extremely well-finished and well-appointed. Even the faux Bird's Eye maple accent trim has a remarkably rich look. Controls are well placed and the instrumentation is quite legible, right down to the Infiniti-signature analog clock that sits in the center of the upper dash. Complementing the expected standards are a host of neat additional touches like dual 12V powerpoints, outside temperature and directional heading displays, a gaggle of front and rear cupholders, intermittent front and rear wipers, multiple storage compartments and rear-seat heating/cooling ducts.
We found the QX4's front buckets to be a bit light on lateral support, although they do merit high marks for comfort and adjustability. Adult capable, the QX4's rear bench is really better suited to carrying kids on any extended journey. However, its 60/40 split back and finger-flick fold-down does make it easy to expand the cargo capacity from 38.0 cubic feet to 85.0. No matter how you configure the aft bay, access is excellent thanks to a large rear hatch with a separate glass element that can be popped open to accept smaller items.
The optional Infiniti CD-based nav system features a 5.8-inch screen with 3-D Birdview display.
With solid competitors like the Acura MDX, BMW X5, GMC Envoy, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Mercedes-Benz ML-320, the QX4 continues to face an uphill battle to claim market share in an increasingly crowded arena. While not the class leader in every category, this all-season Infiniti remains a most enjoyable and multi-talented traveling companion that's well worth checking out if you're seeking a midsize SUV with upscale style and substance.
