Accent GS has a fixed steering column, but the comfortable bucket seats feature many height and support adjustments. A/C and an AM/FM/CD sound system are standard; white-faced gauges help distinguish the GS from the L and GL models.
No surprises in the Accent's suspension design, which matches MacStruts up front and twin lateral links in the rear. Despite being trimmed with anti-roll bars at both axles, these underpinnings are definitely geared more toward optimizing basic ride comfort rather than elevating the car's fun-to-drive index. Rounding out the hardware is power rack-and-pinion steering, power disc/drum brakes (no ABS is available) and 175/70TR13 all-season tires on stamped-steel wheels. Although it's possible to press the GS through corners with a modest degree of enthusiasm, "modest" is definitely the operative adjective. Early onset of at-the-limit push coupled with a tendency to wag its tail in any sharp transition moves quickly dispel any delusions that the "GS" designation might actually be short for "Gran Sport." While this isn't likely to be an impact issue with most owners, it's the one area where some compromises clearly were made in the name of cost-control.
In marked contrast, the Accent GS does boast one decidedly non-econocar feature: a state-of-the-art warranty package. Hyundai's bumper-to-bumper basic coverage spans 5 years or 60,000 miles, while the roadside assistance program remains in effect for 60 months regardless of the odometer reading. The Accent's powertrain elements are protected under a separate and equally impressive 10-year/100K contract.
For buyers in this dollar-sensitive segment, that kind of comprehensive security blanket coupled with 27/35 mpg city/highway EPA figures and a sub-$11,000 as-delivered price tag should earn the Accent GS a spot on their short list of considerees. (www.hyundaiusa.com)
