Not much has changed for 2002, except that a third door (on the driver's side) is standard on all Extended Cabs, and all trucks now contain air conditioning and a tachometer. SLE trim level is gone, but the SLS has added more features, including chrome grille trim. Base models are called SL while all Crew Cabs come in SLS trim.
Sonomas sold in five northern states now come standard with a cold-climate package. As part of GMC's effort to simplify the lineup, the 2WD Regular Cab long-bed has been dropped. Also, trucks with the ZR2 high-rider package are now distinguished by a "ZR2" decal.
New options for 2002 are this bed extender (available throughout the Sonoma lineup) and a hard tonneau cover for Crew Cab models.
Two items are newly optional. One is a cargo-bed extender that creates a little extra storage space for all Sonomas. The other new option is a hard, lockable tonneau cover that provides valuable protection from the elements, but only available for Crew Cab models.
Four-wheel-drive Sonomas have all-disc brakes, while 2WD models have rear drums; ABS is standard with both systems. Four suspension choices are available to suit specific requirements. New audio systems are to be introduced mid-season. Regular Cab trucks are 190.6 inches long, on a 108.3-inch wheelbase, while Extended and Crew Cab models stretch to 205.3 overall inches on a 122.9-inch wheelbase.
Regular Cab Sonomas seat three on the standard bench, or two if bucket seats are preferred. Extended Cab models hold three or four, while the Crew Cab seats five.
