2002 Ford Windstar
Still a true minivan

Windstar earned a 5-star rating in NHTSA crash testing. Further, Ford and Fisher-Price are pioneering a universal child safety-seat system that's secure and easy to use.
On the safety front, antilock braking is standard. Side-impact airbags are standard in the Windstar Limited and available for other versions. With side airbags installed, the Windstar has scored a five-star rating all around in the crash-test program operated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The minivan's front passenger seat has a weight sensor that can automatically shut off the passenger-side airbag if it's not needed. Ford also offers a reverse-sensing system that warns of obstacles at the rear, while backing up. A newly available AdvanceTrac anti-skid system can apply individual brakes and reduce engine power as needed, to regain control.
All Windstars carry seven occupants, except for the cargo edition, which has seats for only the driver and front passenger. Bench seats are installed in the second and third rows of the Windstar LX, but bucket-style seats go into the top-line models. SEL and Limited editions feature leather upholstery. With rear seats folded down, the Windstar boasts a cargo capacity of up to 136.4 cubic feet.
LX-level interior amenities include front buckets with second- and third-row benches. Cloth upholstery is standard for this trim level. Options include an overhead console.
With so many versions offered, Windstar buyers can equip their minivans to suit themselves. A roof rack is available. So is an overhead console, which incorporates a "conversation mirror." Adjustable brake/gas pedals are an option, especially appealing to drivers of shorter stature. A memory package can operate with the pedals, as well as the driver's seat and outside mirrors. To keep the youngsters occupied during long trips, Ford offers an Autovision rear-seat video entertainment system with a pull-down 6.4-inch screen and a removable video cassette player.
From the first moments behind the wheel, the Windstar suggests a pleasant experience, whether you're planning a jaunt to the supermarket or a cross-country trek. One Windstar test-driven a couple of years ago felt heavy and almost truck-like, but the current model produces strictly car-like sensations, much like its top competitors.
With rear seats folded down, the Windstar boasts a cargo capacity of up to 136.4 cubic feet. A 3-door, 2-seat cargo version is also available.
With 200 horsepower on tap, the engine delivers plenty of vigor. It's also quiet when accelerating. The transmission performs well, with a brief but noticeable delay when downshifting to pass or merge.
