Improved comfort and ergonomics are key in the redesigned interior. Options include leather, HID headlamps, a Bose sound system, OnStar and a nav system (V-6 models only).
Rounding out the new A4 package is a restyled passenger compartment that brings a host of new elements and features. Keynoting the list of 2002 improvements are more room, more supportive seats, more user-friendly control layouts and a greater array of standard features. In addition to its comprehensive roster of power assists, all A4s now come with automatic dual-zone climate control and an in-dash 6-disc CD player. Prime items on its fairly short option list include leather upholstery, moonroof, Homelink, Xenon HID headlamps, Bose sound system, and Audi's new telematics package by OnStar. A CD-based navigation system also is available on V-6 A4 models.
Audi intends to hammer home a strong value message with the new A4. To that end, a front-drive 1.8T mode with manual transmission will base at a very attractive $24,900, plus $575 in destination fees. Stepping up to a multitronic transmission will add $1,050 to the tariff. At the other end of the spectrum, the V-6 models start at $31,390 for a multitronic-equipped FWD and rise to $32,090 and $33,140 for Quattro versions fitted with the 6-speed manual and 5-speed Tiptronic, respectively. Given that roughly 85 percent of all A4s sold are fitted with Audi's AWD package, the initial market impact of multitronic will be modest. But make no mistake, you're seeing the future of transmission technology at work here. Based on our first behind-the-wheel encounter, things are looking pretty good. (www.audi.com)
