Audi has given its best-selling model a major overhaul for 2002, and the results are impressive to say the least. Since its introduction in 1995, the A4 has established itself as a solid player in the entry-lux segment. Bolstered by numerous improvements throughout the package, this second-generation offering is destined to enjoy an even higher profile among its aspirational peer set.
Resculpted sheetmetal is flashier and more functional, cutting through wind better than last year's model. This 1.8T has the optional 17-inch tire/wheel package.
While there's plenty to note in the latest A4, its most impressive technical innovation is an all-new continuously variable transmission (CVT). Initially available only in front-drive A4 models, this lightweight, compact "multitronic" CVT is destined to replace the existing Tiptronic transmission throughout the lineup within the next few years. (It will undoubtedly also see duty in other Audi products over time.)
The basic upgrade program starts at the very core of the A4, where a new unibody boasts 45 percent more stiffness than its predecessor. Slightly longer, wider, and taller, this mid-sized Audi also gains a 1.3-inch stretch in wheelbase—0.9-inch of which is directly converted into much-needed additional rear-seat legroom. Cleanly styled, new bodywork adds an extra measure of flair to the established A4 family look while a tidied-up underbody helps minimize lifting forces, fore and aft. The net result is a noticeable reduction in wind and road noise plus enhanced stability.
Audi's proven 1.8-liter turbocharged four reappears, but the A4's V-6 offering is now a 3.0-liter V-6.
Complementing these structural upgrades are major changes to the powertrains that extend far beyond the new CVT. The well-proven 1.8-liter/170-horsepower turbocharged four carries over intact, but the veteran 2.8-liter/190-horse V-6 has been replaced by an all-new, all-aluminum 3.0-liter V-6 that makes 220 ponies. In the gearbox department, the 5-speed manual remains as standard issue with the former engine, but A4 Quattro models with the latter now come with an equally new 6-speed trans.
However, the most significant development is the arrival of the aforementioned multitronic CVT. Developed in-house, it's the first CVT to be used in series production with engines that have this level of displacement and output. Optional on the FrontTrack front-drive A4 1.8T, it's standard on the 3.0L FWD model. Like the existing 5-speed Tiptronic that remains available in both Quattro variants, the multitronic CVT features do-it-yourself shifting capability. Unlike the conventional Tiptronic, it allows cog changes to be made by rocker buttons on the steering wheel as well as by the console-mounted lever.
