Powertrain
The heart of the Z06 is the
new aluminum-block 5.7L LS6. Rated at 385 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm and 385
lb-ft torque @ 4,800 rpm, the LS6's powerband comes on at lower rpm and
pulls higher than the LS1. Much of this power results from the redesigned,
higher-compression heads, which have unshrouded valves, straighter passages
and revised ports. The fuel injectors throw 10% more charge, and the
higher-lift camshaft works in concert with stiffer valve springs.
Heart of the Z06 is a hot LS6 V-8. Higher compression and better overall breathing allow it to crank out 385 horses?40 more than the LS1 in a standard Vette.
All Z06s come with the
rugged new M12 six-speed manual gearbox that features higher ratios in all
gears. The clutch, driveshaft and rear transaxle have all been beefed to
handle the LS6's additional torque.

Performance numbers for the Z06 are awesome: 0-60 acceleration is 4.0
seconds and a blistering 12.6 seconds/114mph in the quarter. To put that in
perspective, Zora's 1963 Z06 went 0-60 in 5.8 seconds and clipped the
quarter in 14.5 seconds at 103 mph. But wait, there's more: top speed is
171 mph, and the lateral acceleration is an astounding 1.03 g (the standard
Corvette registers 0.93 g). With a power-to-weight ratio of 8.09:1, the Z06
stands as one the fastest production Corvettes of all time.
Somewhere up there, Zora is
looking down and smiling.
