2001 BMW Z3 Roadster 3.0i Sport
Open-air motoring with landscape-blurring power

In 2000, BMW began transforming its Z3 roadster with several cosmetic updates. The company completed the makeover in 2001 with mechanical upgrades that greatly enhance the roadster's dynamic capabilities.
When the Z3 was introduced as a 1996 model, it was powered by a 138-horsepower, 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine. Sure, a hot-rodded M Roadster eventually was added to the lineup, and last year that model provided 240 horsepower.
A new-generation 3.0-liter inline-six is all-aluminum. With dual overhead cams and 24 valves, the engine's variable valve timing helps the powerplant produce 225 horsepower while meeting ULEV tailpipe levels.
But for 2001, BMW has put its newest 3.0-liter inline six, the M54, into the two-seater to create the Z3 3.0i. The M54 was developed to power the X5 sport-utility vehicle, and subsequently has gone into the 3 Series coupe, sedan and convertible. Rated at 225 hp, the new engine bumps the standard Z3 3.0i to within 15 hp of last year's M Roadster. Granted, the Z3 3.0i isn't an all-out boy-racer M Roadster—especially considering that the 2001 M model has 315 hp under its long hood. But the price of that package is $46,635.
At a base MSRP of $38,470, the new 3.0i is both a sub-six-second sprinter and a comfortable, refined package. The new engine is only the start of a dynamic transformation that includes a new 5-speed, ZF Type C manual transmission, larger (11.8-inch) front brake rotors and 17-inch, Z-rated tires on 7.5-inch front and 8.5-inch rear wheels.
The list of standard equipment is long and impressive. It includes dynamic stability (anti-spin) control, side-impact airbags, integrated roll bars behind the seats, halogen head and fog lights, power-adjustable leather seats, power windows and locks, a chrome-trimmed interior and a Harman Kardon sound system. Available options include a power top, heated seats, CD player and a Sport Package that includes sport seats and 17-inch cross-spoke wheels.

Re: engine smoke
How big was the overhaul? Could be poorly installed rings. Did the guy hone the bore?
Did he replace the valve guides?
